Discover Saint-Jean-De-Luz
Welcome to Saint-Jean-de-Luz! This pretty town on the Basque coast, also called Cité des Corsaires, is known for its seaside resort and its Basque culture.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a Basque town and proud of it
Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Donibane Lohizune in Basque, is full of character, charm and history.
The architecture of the city meets all the Basque codes with its walls sometimes red, sometimes green. It is good to stroll in the pedestrian and shopping streets as well as on the promenade along the bay which connects the port to the Pointe de Sainte-Barbe. Once appreciated by the notables of France, you can still see the marks of history in the city today: like the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste where Louis XIV married who then had the door walled through which the royal couple are out so that no one will ever take the same passage again.
The City of Corsairs is very attached to its port which is an integral part of its heritage. The comings and goings of fishing boats animate the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, whose auction is the 6th largest in France. The fishing practiced by the fishmongers and trawlers is artisanal, they return loaded with anchovies, tuna and hake caught by line. You can find the fish of the day’s catch in many restaurants in downtown Saint-Jean-de-Luz and on the entire Basque coast.
The Erromardie district, its beach and its relaxed rhythm of life
Our campsite, Le Bord de Mer, is aptly named, it is located on the cliff overlooking Erromardie beach. This beach, a few minutes from the city center, is renowned for its calm and warm atmosphere.
Spearfishing lovers, freedivers, surfers when there are waves and those who like to swim in salt water find their happiness in Erromardie. This rocky bottom beach surrounded by its hills enjoys an ideal location in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, it is the first beach accessible from the city in just a few minutes (about 2km).
This proximity to the city as well as the other beaches of Saint-Jean-de-Luz (The bay, Lafitenia, Mayarco and Cenitz) gives you access to many water activities during your stay at Le Bord de Mer campsite.
Summer activities in Saint-Jean-de-Luz
Erromardie is a quiet area that comes alive in the evening to enjoy the sunset, with your feet in the sand and with an aperitif in hand! Notably thanks to the Bistro du Mata, adjacent to the campsite, which opens its doors to you every day from breakfast during the summer.
Children and older children can also enjoy the Erromardie arena where torro-pools, donkey races and other activities take place throughout the season. The show is there, you can watch it peacefully and even participate, who knows?
The city of Saint-Jean-de-Luz is no slouch when it comes to entertainment, in summer the alleys are alive and lively! Every Wednesday and Sunday the torro de fuego takes place in Place Louis XIV, a joyful and luminous show that parodies the bullfight and ends with a battle of confetti. The whole family marvels at the fireworks launched from the torro as it cuts through the crowd. La Cité des Corsaires relies on its summer atmosphere to properly welcome holidaymakers: thalassotherapy, cinema, market halls, bars / restaurants, children’s club, etc.
At Le Bord de Mer, you will have the opportunity to see all the facets of the Basque Country and calmly enjoy your stay with a breathtaking view. Ready for a stay in Saint-Jean-de-Luz?
